Im Spätsommer 2024 erscheint „300 Keywords Generative KI“ von Prof. Dr. Oliver Bendel – sein fünftes Lexikon in der Reihe von Springer Gabler. Es ist, wie der Titel schon verrät, der generativen KI gewidmet, im Englischen „generative AI“ oder „GenAI“ genannt. In weit mehr als 300 Einträgen wird das Thema ausgeleuchtet. Dabei spielen neben technischen und wirtschaftlichen Fragen insbesondere ethische und ästhetische eine Rolle. So wird nach der Schönheit von Artefakten gefragt, es wird die Stellung von Bildern zwischen Kunst und Kitsch ausgeleuchtet, und es wird eine Bias-Diskussion zu Text- und Bildgeneratoren geführt. So handelt das Nachschlagewerk den „american smile“ ab, zudem die Obsession von DALL-E 3 mit Bärten und Hinterteilen. Insgesamt steht der Nutzen der generativen KI im Vordergrund, und die Freude und Lust, sie zu benutzen. Dies entspricht der Grundhaltung des Wirtschaftsinformatikers und Technikphilosophen aus Zürich zu Ansätzen und Technologien dieser Art. Das Lexikon ist am 29. April in Produktion gegangen. Erfahrungsgemäß dauert es drei bis vier Monate bis zur Veröffentlichung.

An AI-generated Book on the American Smile

DALL-E 3 is an excellent image generator and at the same time full of stereotypes and biases. One very interesting phenomenon is that of the American smile, which appears again and again in the images. The idea for the little book „AMERICAN SMILE“ came to Oliver Bendel when he read the blog post „AI and the American Smile. How AI misrepresents culture through a facial expression“ (medium.com/@socialcreature/ai-and-the-american-smile-76d23a0fbfaf). The author – username jenka – showed a series of „selfies“ made with Midjourney. Regardless of the time period or culture, people smiled in a similar, American way. Oliver Bendel investigated this phenomenon and asked DALL-E 3 to take pictures of smiling people from different eras and cultures. He also got bears and aliens to smile. In fact, with very few exceptions, they all smiled in a similar way. He documented the pictures, along with the prompts, in a little book that can be downloaded here.
